Manual Therapy

A systematic, problem-solving approach to patient-centered assessment and treatment techniques used in the comprehensive management of spinal, upper extremity, lower extremity, temporomandibular joint and neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions. Your physiotherapist will integrate a variety of manual techniques such as mobilizations, manipulations, neural flossing, soft tissue lengthening and joint specific stability exercise to maximize the return to normal joint mobility and function.

Spinal Manipulation

This technique is used to restore function and mobility of a specific spinal segment.  It is a skilled technique in which the physiotherapist applies a low amplitude high velocity thrust to a specific level. Our clinicians are specially trained with the highest post graduate levels of manual therapy which allows this technique to be performed in both a safe and effective way.

Joint Mobilization

Manipulative Physiotherapists are highly trained at using their hands to diagnose and treat restrictions in movement in the spine, arms and legs. Using gentle hands-on techniques, we can help reduce muscle tightness and pain and improve movement and function in the joints.

Functional Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment for muscular tightness and spasm which commonly follows injuries and often accompanies the degenerative process. This therapy involves our physiotherapist advancing a filament needle multiple times into an affected area in order to release a trigger point. By causing the muscles to contract and release, you will have less pain and improved flexibility.

Proprioceptive Stabilization

A crucial component to properly rehabilitating any joint dysfunction is restoring the proprioceptive feedback loop. This loop is the communication link between our joints and our brain, thereby ensuring proper movement and positional integration to help prevent ongoing dysfunction. Our clinicians will incorporate this key component into your rehab program to help maximize recovery and prevent injury recurrence.

Neuromuscular Control

Essentially all movement is an interplay between the muscular and neural systems. For movement to exist freely and without pain, a subtle influence must ensure the proper balance between force production, force reduction, and timing of muscle contraction. Without this balance, compensations arise, poor motor planning takes over and often pain is a result. Our clinicians can help re-establish the proper patterning to ensure smooth integrated movement.

Sports Therapy

We work with athletes to not only treat injuries, but to prevent them. By understanding the nature of sport and the effect on the body, we can help plan exercises and techniques that make your athletic efforts more successful. And if injured, we can help lessen your rehabilitation time to get you back to competition.

Return to Sport Program

Our CAMPT certified team will take our training and experience and focus it all on your quick recovery and return to sport. We will work closely with you to define the issue and build a program that is individualized to you and your injury. By understanding how your injury occurred, we can create new exercises and routines for you to avoid experiencing the same issues in the future.

Specialized Taping

We are pleased to offer a variety of taping techniques that are designed to improve joint stability and proprioception as well as decrease pain and swelling. Tapes used include K-Leukotape and sports tape. We are also pleased to offer taping clinics designed for specific conditions that coaches, parents or partners can apply.

Gait and Running Analysis

Let us provide you a detailed assessment of your specific gait (walking) and running patterns. These results will be used to develop specific strengthening and/or stretching programs aimed at maximizing performance and minimizing strain and stress to the body. The end result – better positioning and more power.

Concussion Management

Advantage Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine Clinic is a proud clinic of the Complete Concussion Management Inc.™ Partnership Program – a network of clinics around the world offering evidence-based concussion care. From initial pre-season baseline testing to concussion treatment and rehabilitation, as partnered CCMI practitioners, we collaborate with primary care physicians to co-manage concussions, helping patients and athletes safely return to learn, work and play.

Baseline Testing

Multimodal pre-season testing is a series of physical and cognitive tests that provides a pre-injury overview of healthy brain function. These tests can offer healthcare practitioners with an objective benchmark on which to compare should a patient sustain a concussion. CCMI has selected the best evidence-based tools available to provide you with comprehensive, multimodal, proven baseline-testing. This testing consists of various tests of function (i.e. balance, reaction time, vision, memory, concentration, etc.) that could become impaired following a concussion injury.

As concussion symptoms often disappear days to weeks before the brain has fully recovered, having valuable baseline information may help practitioners to make safer return to play decisions.

Contact us to learn more about baseline testing to see if it’s right for you.

“What is a Concussion?”

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

Post Concussion Syndrome

Persistent concussion symptoms can occur. When a concussion has occurred there is a process in which the body has an energy depletion. When trying to function at the same level previous to the injury without proper recovery, the brain can take longer to recover. This can be months to years that you are suffering from these symptoms. There are certain factors that may be causing these persistent symptoms, but they are treatable with proper rehabilitation.

Specific factors causing persistent concussion symptoms may include:

  1. Blood flow
  2. Metabolic/ Inflammatory factors
  3. Visual/ Vestibular
  4. Neck pain
  5. Psychological

Acute Concussion

During the early stage following injury, a period of relative symptom limited physical and cognitive rest is recommended. Research suggests 24 to 48 hours, however, these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Following a short period of rest, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) recommends a gradual increase in mental and physical activity by a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.

Concussion Tracker App

The CCMI Concussion Tracker smartphone app supports safer return-to-sport decisions for young athletes. The app captures and shares an athletes’ concussion status in real time.

Where a concussion hits, Concussion Tracker enables an athlete’s stakeholders to:

  • Report and track concussion
  • Conduct sideline assessments
  • Ensure seamless communication with clinician
  • Record athlete’s recovery status and timeline
  • Store and view pre-season concussion test results
  • Track daily symptoms for recovery progress
  • Recovery diet plan
  • Return to school/sport protocols

Return to Work/Learn/Play

1. Symptom Limited Activity (24-48hours)

2. Light Cognitive Activity (30-40mins)

2. Exercise Tolerance Testing

3. Half Day of School or Work (modifications)

3. Light, Non-Contact Sport Activity

4. Full Day of School or Work (modifications)

4. Intense, Non-Contact Sport Activity

5. Full Day of School or Work (no modifications)

5. Physical Exertion Test & Baseline Re-Assessment

6. Return to Sport

Concussion Management

In conjunction with CCMI, we offer concussion treatment services & strategies including a combination of:

  • Symptom limited exercise
  • Cervical manual therapy
  • Vestibular therapy
  • Oculomotor rehabilitation
  • Vision therapy
  • Cognitive rehabilitation
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Diet management
  • Sleep rehab
  • Educational resources

Pediatric Therapy

A full motor assessment is performed in clinic with the child and their parents. Range of motion, strength, positioning, gross motor skills, muscle tone, primitive reflexes, functional abilities and walking mechanics are assessed to identify your child’s needs. Physiotherapy is used to ensure secondary effect such as delays in gross and fine motor development, difficulty with breastfeeding, impaired posture, muscular imbalances and asymmetries in movements are avoided. A combination of education, play based therapy, Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) and exercises are used to help children ages 0 months -18 years improve to keep playing and growing!
